Surrounding Environment
Minamiyamashiro, with an area of 6,421 hectares and a population of about 3,000, is the only “village (mura) “ in Kyoto Prefecture. Situated in the remote southeastern corner of Kyoto, the valleys and hills overlooking the clear Kizu and Nabari Rivers are predominantly covered with lush green tea fields. Apart from the shrines dotting the village, landmarks include the Yamanami Hall (venue for cultural programs from both within and outside the village) situated near the village office, and the Chisan Tokubai Jo, a local produce market serving as a meeting place for the local community. Frequent community festivals take place at shrines and other venues, such as disused school buildings. Gallery Den mym is increasingly in the spotlight as an attractive arts venue.
Access to Gallery Den mym can be found at (in Japanese)
Gallery Den mym (Minamiyamashiro mura or village) was established in 2010 in a renovated 120-year old house by the owner of Gallery Den, which had showcased contemporary art in Osaka City for 15 years. The relocation of the gallery coincided with the retirement and the move to the countryside of the gallery owner’s husband. After expanding the exhibition space, the gallery started to work on creating an artist’s residency space, which had been planned since the relocation. The artist-in-residence facility, AIR Minamiyamashiro Village, opened in spring 2012 in another renovated traditional house in the same grounds.
Year of (Program) Commencement
Program Objectives
Today’s compelling, expressive activities should certainly not be too “fragile” to withstand any but the urban environment, and sometimes need to be put to the test in rustic, living landscapes. The program aspires to promote direct experience as a vehicle for cutting through the directionless route of contemporary art.
Program Activities
The footprints of people’s daily lives over the ages can be seen throughout this mountain village. The future we will face is determined by how we experience the messages contained in such footprints. While Gallery Den mym serves as a platform to exhibit and appreciate works, AIR Minamiyamashiro Village offers valuable opportunities to experience the dynamism of creative process.
