Year of (Program) Commencement
Program Objectives
Private art groups in Omachi City such as Mendocino International Exchange Program and the Primitive Sense Art Festival have been inviting international artists to the city. Moreover, the international art festival "Shinano-Omachi Food and Art Corridor" will be held in 2017. Ushikoshi Toru, the mayor of Omachi City, is the chairman of the executive committee and Fram Kitagawa, one of the most representative art directors in Japan, will be the Art director.
Asahi Air will fully cooperate with this movement for creating new aspect of locality in Japan. We will also manage the performance program for local residence. Through creating a relationship between local residence and artistic creativity, we offer new possibilities for life in Omachi City.
Program Activities
Theme “Mountain, Snow and Lifestyle”
I believe artists have the ability to realize miracles, because artists can convict their own instincts and update their life through the realization of works of art. Our generation is in a period of transition and more and more information will be made available through the development of computers and efficient systems. If we continue down this path, each of us should know what we really want to do and how we can keep doing it as human beings. This is the most important ability we can have in this transition period.
I was born in Tokyo and grew up in the city. I moved to Nagano prefecture from the UK in 2012 when I had my first child. I went to a local job center and started to work for Omachi City Council as a monkey chaser. I chased monkeys every day for two years in my work as a supporter of farmers in their battle with monkeys. I driving the foot of the mountains from 8 am to 5 pm and it was a great experience to observe the richness of the Shinano-Omachi area. The water coming down from the Japanese north alps produces good foods such as rice, wheat, vegetables, and fish. I also experienced spring with snowmelt water, summer with an explosion of greenery, autumn with vibrant colors, and winter with a white landscape. That gave me an understanding of the four seasons in Japan and the beauty of the local lifestyle.
This is an opportunity to come to the countryside of Japan at the foot of the mountains. The snow will be falling from the middle of December and it will be a white landscape in February. The studio facilities of Asahi AIR were built 44 years ago, so you will be experiencing the old Japanese lifestyle. I am looking forward to meeting an artist who will realize something miraculous from the deepest part of Japan. Thank you.
