With many family-run factories and artisan workshops, this area has a distinct touch of commoners’ culture. Within 5 km away are Ueno, Kiyosumi-Shirakawa which have many cultural facilities. Good public transportation access to the center of Tokyo, as the nearest railway station, Asakusa Station, is on both Ginza and Asakusa Lines. It is a convenient location for visitors from other parts of Japan and from overseas countries, as these train systems are directly connected to Haneda and Narita Airports.

History
Key themes of Asahi Art Square are “future, citizens, and community.” In 2008, a project focusing on the first theme “future” was launched with the title of Asahi Art Square Residency Project. After two years of the launch, the project was combined with another artist support program for contemporary dance choreographers, “Grow up! Dance Project,” and relaunched with a new name, “Grow up! Artist Project.”
Year of (Program) Commencement
2008
Program Objectives
Aim to support aspiring artists of any genre who seek the further devolvement of their artistic expression and new challenges. As its purpose is to support artists in reviewing and reflecting on their expression, the project does not necessarily require participants to demonstrate the results of the project in the form of exhibitions or theater performance. (Participants will report their activities at an open debriefing event.)
Program Activities
Support artists already having debut on stage or exhibition in bringing themselves up to the higher level through the process of stepping back and reflecting on their artistic expression from various angles. Financial aid, complimentary use of studio/art creation space, and useful important information and means to think of their artistic projects will be provided to the artists selected.
* Details of the support will be determined based on the discussion with the participating artists, which may include:
For choreographers: Practicing the Critical Response Process method;
For other artists: Introducing artists for possible collaboration in the genre selected; and
For theater performers: Introducing an appropriate dramaturge (theatrical advisor) who is deemed appropriate for the theatrical work the artist is working on.
* Poster preparation and advertising of the open debriefing event to be held at the end of the project is taken care of by Asahi Art Square Office.
Outcomes
2008 Asahi Art Square Residence Project: Dance performance “New World” by Mure.
* The above was pre-performed on June 2007.
2008 Grow up!! Dance Project: Dance performance “syzygy” by Neji Pijin, “Time Difference” by Yuta Ishikawa.
AAS Residence Project 2009: Exhibition "Rat, Hide Behind the Gut of Whale" by Taro Izumi.
