MORIUMIUS is a hands-on learning facility (renovated from a public elementary school established in 1923) consisting of guest rooms and a dining kitchen (both in the former wooden schoolhouse), a bathing space, a hall and a studio for experience activities, and school grounds. MORIUMIUS is located in Ogatsu Town, a coastal town in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. This facility has a thick forest on a hill behind it and a fisherman’s village within five minutes’ walk to the coast. Although 80% of the town was swept away by a tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, resulting in a decrease in the population to about 1,000, the town is now trying to nurture the next generation and revitalize itself by increasing visitors through educational exchange.
